Painting Small Town Ontario with Don Cavin: August 1 - 4, 2014

Don Cavin leads us on a three-day exploration of small town Ontario centred around the charming village of Westport, Ontario. Small towns provide a wealth of subject matter, from quaint houses, disregarded back alleys, to picturesque harbours. AJ Casson and other Group of Seven artists took them on and gave them a dignity and depth that other artists had failed to.
Don Cavin takes a unique approach to small towns, and his individualistic approach to the subject will help you produce work unlike anything you've done before.
Starting in the charming middle Ontario town of Westport (80 Km north of Kingston), you will be surprised at the diversity of subjects these towns have to offer.

Participating artists arrive late Friday afternoon and join us for dinner at 6:30, after which we have a discussion about art, your hopes for the weekend, etc. You'll bring a couple of pieces you've painted for Don to look over and give you feedback on. (This gives Don insight into your strengths and weaknesses.)
Saturday at 9 am we head straight to the first location where you get down to painting right away, taking advantage of the morning light. At noon, a demo by Don; then we carry on painting till the end of the afternoon. Don is there for you all day as mentor and coach while you capture the diverse scenery of small town Ontario.
Sunday we begin the day with painting a new location in the morning, a demo at noon, followed by more individual painting. Monday we start again at 9 and paint until lunch where Don gives us a final demo. Some of us stick around for a few hours more, while others head home.
